Internationally acclaimed choreographer/dancer Vincent Mantsoe brings his South African the influences of street dance of his childhood with traditional and contemporary dance styles in a form he calls ‘Koba’ (bend/plie). Spirituality and the cultural influences of African, Aboriginal Australian, Asian, contemporary, and ballet traditions are important influences on Mantsoe’s work and choreographic exploration. This high-energy workshop is an implementation of center of gravity in motion followed by various cross integration movements to allow the body the freedom of expression to articulate what one feels and hears.
Vincent recognizes the influences of spirituality in his creative process as ‘borrowing’ from the ‘ancestors’ – noting the importance of understanding and appreciating the sources of traditional movements.
He has toured internationally performing at venues including the Kennedy Center (USA), the Dance Umbrella (London UK) and the National Arts Center (Ottawa). His work has won top prize at the 5th and 6th Rencontre Choreographique de Bagnolet, France and the prestigeous Prix de Peuple at the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse, Montreal ,1999.
All master classes take place at Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street, Vancouver BC, unless otherwise indicated.
